Mountaintop removal mining impacts not only the health of the environment but the people living in the environment. Cancer rates are two times higher in areas of mountaintop removal mining and babies born near mountaintop removal mining are 26% more likely to be born with birth defects. Issuing permits for mountaintop removal mining violates the purpose of the Clean Water Act to protect our nation’s waters. Yet, coal companies are aiming to fill over 300 more valleys and level over 30,000 mountain acres, destroy over 100 miles of streams and pollute more local waterways.
